Job Description

This is a Full Time Temporary Position

Reports to:  Farm Manager

Position Summary:

The field crew works primarily in the 12-acre certified organic farm that is overseen by the Director of Agriculture Production. Our typical workweek is Monday-Friday from 8 am – 5 pm, however, hours may shift depending on the season and the scope of work to complete, and this also includes weekends; 7-day availability is important. The farm produces vegetables, herbs, berries, and fruit used in special events, farm dinners, CSA and sold in our farm stand and at farmers markets. The farms’ design and management demonstrate sustainable soil management and deficit water use, and supports beneficial insects and pollinators, local bird populations, and wildlife habitat.

This position is responsible for a variety of tasks on the farm including:

• Harvesting (All harvesting is done by hand)

• Post-Harvest/Wash Station work (washing, bunching, quality control, packing)

• Planting (hand transplanting, planting with push seeders, hand seeding)

• Irrigation set-up (drip tape, overhead sprinklers)

• High Tunnel Crop Production & Trellising (mainly tomatoes)

• Tillage, Cultivation, Weeding & Thinning (tractors, wheel hoes, stirrup hoes, hand weeding)

• Pest & Disease Control; Fertilizing & Composting

• Seed Saving, Cover Cropping and Soil Management

• Farmers Market (if needed) 

Additional Responsibilities:       

• Help farm apprentices, youth participants, staff persons and volunteers

• Recordkeeping to maintain compliance with organic certification including all production, irrigation, harvest & sales logs

• Operate agricultural equipment in the field

• Occasionally assist in set up and tear down of events in garden, including farm-to-table dinners and workshops

Key Requirements:

• Available for full-time, seasonal work, April – November with limited vacation

• Ability to work hard; standing, sitting, bending over or kneeling: to lift, push and pull heavy objects, up to 50lbs: perform physical work such as digging or planting

• Ability to thrive under challenging conditions and be flexible and respond to changes that arise due to schedule changes or adverse weather conditions

• Positive attitude

• Consistent attention to detail

• Basic knowledge of organic vegetable production and a genuine curiosity to learn more

• Interest in the educational side of agriculture

• Experience working with children and youth in a garden setting

• Ability to stay organized while juggling multiple projects simultaneously

• Be able to take direction and ask for clarification if needed

• Must adhere to safety protocols at all times

• Able to pass a background check including driving record

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:

• Valid driver’s license

• CPR/First Aid

Our seasonal positions pay up to $21/hr and are eligible for 5 paid days off during the season.  Seasonal employees who do a great job are also eligible for an end-of-season bonus and special perks if they return in subsequent years.  In addition, we have some housing available for seasonal staff at much below-market rental rates.
